"Artist Reveals a Detailed Homage to The Real Ghostbusters in Official Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Artwork"

Last month, Waxwork Records excited fans by announcing the upcoming vinyl release of Dario Marianelli’s score for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Just like the film, which took cues from the beloved 1980s animated series The Real Ghostbusters, the deluxe double LP features fresh artwork by JJ Harrison, paying tribute to the classic cartoon.

n our original report, we highlighted how the LP’s gatefold artwork reimagines early production art from The Real Ghostbusters. The iconic original team is replaced with the Spengler family from Frozen Empire, Slimer is swapped out for the Hell’s Kitchen Sewer Dragon, and the upgraded Ghost Trap, the FPV Drone, is prominently featured.

For a bit of nostalgia, you can revisit the original artwork below. Many of us remember it fondly from our childhood, adorning everything from board games to TV dinner trays. Now, let’s turn our attention to Harrison’s tribute. He shared a closer look at the art on Instagram, explaining, “There were lots of little nods to The Real Ghostbusters in the movie, so I wanted to include my own with a tribute to that fantastic original RGB art painted by Gabi Payn, which ended up on board games, TV trays, and VHS covers when we were kids in the 80s. Mine pales in comparison to Payn’s, but it was so fun to do, and I knew diehard GB fans would appreciate the reference.”

Harrison also mentioned a small change requested by Sony, adding, “In my sketch, Rudd originally had a playful look, lifting his sunglasses like Winston in the original art, but Sony nixed that since it wasn’t accurate to the film. If you watch the movie, though, Venkman does that exact thing with his sunglasses when they encounter the big bad Garraka. Coincidence? I could have asked Gil Kenan, but maybe it’s more fun not to know.”

This release is a must-have for any Ghostbusters fan. Waxwork Records’ Frozen Empire deluxe double LP is available in an exclusive “Slimer” neon green vinyl, honoring the iconic gluttonous ghost with a vibrant ectoplasmic green pressing, as well as in a captivating “Frozen Empire” splatter-colored vinyl.
